Smucker's Hot Dogs and NFNS

Drawing For Food went to the casting call for The Next Food Network Star (well, Chau auditioned, not me) and get ready to watch her on TV because the only competition were some hard luck looking line cooks and middle aged housewives from south jersey talking about eggplant. Oh and a scary looking pepto bismol plastic faced woman with pink high heels, pink lipstick and a pink apron.

Afterwords we hit up the Reading Terminal and went right to Smucker's for some Amish hot dogs. It's a great stand that I think used to be just a butcher / deli but now they do breakfast sandwiches, sausage, even a pot roast sandwich drowned in gravy that looked amazing.

The dogs are not natural casing but are of Lancaster origin and delicious. Short and fat franks covered in kraut. Also the hash browns were delicious like Mcdonald's style but better. It's worth noting they are open on the days (at least Tuesday) that the other Amish stuff is closed. So if you come to go to the Dutch Eating Place and it's not open Smucker's is a great plan B.

Pennsylvania Dutch Choucroute

Knockwurst and Smoked Kielbasa from the Amish, seared in bacon fat and cooked with sauerkraut and beer. Everything came from the Reading Terminal Market including the pickled green tomatoes and pickled sausage from AJ's pickle patch. Also "vegetable salad" which is basically just a rough cut slaw / pepper cabbage.

Family style seems to be the theme lately whether it's Russian food or barbecue. Big hunks of meat and a bunch of bowls of pickled stuff.

Dinic's Pulled Pork

Word is that the Pulled Pork Italian (different than roast pork) is the way to go at DiNic's in the Reading Terminal.
Yes. Delicious.

Still no vote from me on the best pork sandwich in Philly. Although I'd put this up there with John's and George's on 9th street. (The one that was on the Sandwiches That You Will Like PBS show). Haven't been to Paesano's yet though, I hear good things....

Pearl's Oyster Bar

The family that works at Pearl's Oyster bar in the Reading Terminal is amazingly Philadelphia. When I ordered the homemade ice tea unsweetened, I recieved a shocking look from our waitress who said "Wha-? C'mon it's sweet tea? I mean whatever, get whatever you want"

So when the guy next to me ordered the ice tea she said "Sweetened? Yeah I thought so, that's what I would get"

The oysters came on ice with just paper cups of ketchup, lemons and a side of horseradish. 6 oysters for 8 bucks not bad.

Hello Amish Diner

If you can get to the Reading Terminal on Thursday or Friday (Saturday is too crowded) I highly reccommend having a leisurely lunch at the Amish Diner. Because you're in Pennsylvania! We may not have the best sushi or all nite Thai noodle bars, but darnit we've got the Pennsylvania Dutch! For 9 bucks I enjoyed a small sloppy joe platter, homemade lemonade and a fresh warm apple dumpling served with ice cold cream.

The sloppy joe tasted like it was made with maple and bacon, on a fresh potato roll. The fries were fried to order and were crisp and salty. The apple dumpling kept soaking in all the cream everytime I poured more into the bowl, it was fantastiche!
