Broad & Morris Hot Dogs

Thanks to Tim Gough for tipping me off to a hot dog cart that appeared out of the blue. Nothing fancy just some dudes selling hot dogs on Broad Street. The vendor told me they were moving around the corner to Morris (apparently food carts are not allowed on Broad?, or at least that stretch. He also thought I was from the health department after I took a picture ) but they will be there all summer.

My hot dog was sort of gray but the hot sausage was decent. Interesting system of topping your own dogs from plastic deli cups of chopped onions and relish. The meatball sandwich looked good, they do hot roast beef too.

Apparently this corner is street food central in the summer with Cambodians frying whole fish and all sorts of "stands" that are not much more than a flame and a piece of metal to cook stuff on. I really see no reason for me NOT to go out there with a grill and a sack of Sahlen's hot dogs, or maybe one of those awesome German grillwalker suits.

Taiwan Street Food

During my short stay in Taiwan everyone I knew told me to eat street food. Which is I guess awesome. So our friends took us to a market and got us these crazy deep fried egg pockets and it was awesome but greasy. They give it to you in a plastic bag so its all piping hot and then burns your hand.

Potacos

Back from L.A., and there was good eating. But before I pass out and attempt to make it to work the next day I had to put a picture up of these potato tacos. It was after the opening, my good friend's Ako and Emi decided that they would take off and meet us back at the house. They arrive with 25 deep fried potato tacos covered in cheese and guacamole. The homemade green and red sauce was delicious and the deep friedness went well with our drunken whiskey state.

I have no idea where they came from, I didn't ask questions I just ate them before they got cold. I've decided I think this was the best thing I had ever had.

Allentown Fair

Livestock competitions, freak shows, blue ribbon onions, redneck t-shirts and most importantly, lots and lots of great fair food. Corn dogs, 'broasted' chicken, Ribs, Ice cream, Toasted Cheese Hamburgers, Cheesesteaks, Tacos & Mexican food, Pierogies, Funnel Cake, Root Beer Floats.

Corn Dogs

Great way to start a day of massive eating. Hand dipped right in front of me, this corn dog was piping hot and delicious. The stand also had Deep Fried Twinkies which I meant to come back and try but didnt have the time - maybe next year.

Pit Beef

A pit beef is a grilled side of beef (not sure what cut) sliced thin right in front of you, dipped in meat jus and slapped onto a hot dog roll with your choice of onions, cheese, ketchup. Similar to a cheesesteak, the meat was delicious but the cheap roll was lacking in flavor and texture - something that makes the beloved philly cheesesteak so special.

Pierogies

This little mom and pop pierogie stand hit the spot. They were super friendly and the truly homemade pierogies slathered in melted butter and onions were terrific.

Chili Dogs

Willie Joe's has two locations in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Nice snap to the dog, with a delicious 'hot dog sauce' style chili.

Best In Show

Along with all the rides & food the allentown fair also has competitions for everything from 'best decorative table setting' to 'best onions'. First prize is anywhere from 2 to 5 dollars. An entire pavillion is filled with people's collections of old junk, homemade cookies, amateur art, prize tomatoes, cake decoration.. all for the public to be amazed.

Tamale Undergound

Every saturday afternoon a car pulls up in the alley behind where I work, and all the dishwashers and cooks race to the back door to get in line for some of the best tamales around. Everything is served out of the trunk of a car, kept warm or cold using various ingenious methods.

Also available are tacos, quesadillas, mexican soda and a strange super milky sweet hot chocolate type beverage that's not for everyone.

Saturday is a super busy day too - I've definitely burned somebody's $800 lunch while waiting in line for tamales, but it's worth it.
